Oral Cancer Screening

Oral Cancer Screening in Chesapeake VA

Our motto is, don't wait until it's too late. Oral cancer is one of the few types of cancer that have not seen a significant reduction in mortality rates over the last 30 years. The problem with oral cancer is that it usually is not discovered until it's already in its late stages. This is often too late for the proper care.

Traditionally, oral cancer has been associated with tobacco use, however, there are other causes, too. Smokers, drinkers, people over age 40, and anyone sexually active are at risk of oral cancer. The proper way to check for oral cancer is often. This way something can be done about it. Discovering oral cancer early on allows time for proper treatment to be taken. This is why we provide oral cancer screenings for our patients during regular check-ups. It is our goal to find it early so something can be done about it.

We  Offer Oral Cancer Screenings

During your regular check-up, we will conduct an oral cancer screening. This allows us to examine all our patients for oral cancer, conveniently and often. We want to provide the best dental care we can for every patient and this is one of the ways we provide this.

What If You Find Something During My Screening?

If we find something suspicious during your screening, it very well may be nothing of concern. Chewing the inside of your cheek or irritation caused by dentures or braces may create suspicious-looking areas during your screening. If this happens, we'll ask you to come back in a few weeks so we can determine if it's something of concern. If the area improves by your next visit, we know it's not oral cancer. If the area has not improved, we will recommend further exams. This may include a biopsy that will be evaluated by an oral pathologist. Even though it is unlikely, if the biopsy reveals pre=cancerous or cancerous tissue, then you will be referred for the appropriate treatment. We'll help you understand your options and what to expect.

We're Here To Help

It is our goal to diagnose oral cancer early on. Even if you aren't a smoker, oral cancer is still a possibility. Everyone should get checked. The survival rate for oral cancer discovered during the early stages is very high. This is why we provide a screening during regular check-ups for all of our patients. We want to check often and discover it early. We're here to help and we'll help you throughout the process. If you ever have any questions about oral cancer, just let us know and we'll help you understand the signs of oral cancer and how it works.
